How to pick a good carpet fiber for your home!

There are quite a few different carpet  fiber types, but
deciding on one for your home doesn’t have to be complicated!  The first step would be to decide between Synthetic or Natural fibers.  What are the key differences?  Which is better for your lifestyle & needs?  What is the price difference?  Here are the pros & cons of both Natural & Synthetic fibers.

Natural:  While natural fibers aren’t the most popular, they still have a strong place in the carpet industry!  The most popular fiber in this category would probably be wool.  Other natural fibers are more commonly made into rugs because of their texture and strength (like cotton, silk, sisal, and more).
Pros:
– Made from more sustainable resources, they are more environmentally friendly than synthetics.
– The most common (wool) has good durability.
Cons:
– Tends to be more expensive.
– Once a spot penetrates beneath the protective layer of the carpeting, it is quite difficult to remove.  (Although our Spot & Odor Specialists have a pretty good success rate!)
– Difficult to maintain.  Natural fibers require specialty cleaning products and cleaning professionals trained in these special fiber types.

Synthetic:  The main types of synthetic fibers are Nylon, Polyester, and Olefin (or polypropylene).
Pros:
– Cost
– Durability
– Stain Resistance
– Practicality
Cons:
They release VOCs and are not very environmentally friendly.
So which one is right for your home?  If you have pets or kids, you may want to lean towards synthetic fibers.  In my next posts, I’ll delve into individual fiber types!
