What To Do When Your Basement Floods
There are a number of reasons your basement may be flooded, causing some serious damage — oversaturated ground due to heavy rains, overflow from a river or stream, a broken pump, a burst pipe, or faulty appliance or plumbing fixture among other things.
Don’t fret! Depending on the extent of the flood, your carpeting may be saved! Follow the steps below to understand how you may save your carpets instead of spending thousands in repairs or new carpeting.
Get rid of the water
Use wet-dry vacuums or pumps to remove as much water as you can until no more water can be extracted.
Dry the room
Remove wet furniture from the room in order to dry thoroughly. Fans and dehumidifiers should be used to circulate fresh air and help with the drying process. Weather-permitting, open doors, and windows. Humidity can cause problems with drying, so run the air conditioner instead to minimize moisture in the air if humidity is an issue.
Dry the carpet
With professional recommendations or assistance, remove the carpet from the tack strip and discard padding. This will allow the subfloor to dry as well. “Tent” the carpet over chairs or ladders to allow air to circulate on either side of the carpet.
Clean and deodorize
Before cleaning carpets, you should be sure that the basement and your carpets are fully dry. After being cleaned, carpets should be allowed to dry fully for at least 24 more hours.
