How to remove makeup spills from your carpet

As with every spill, it’s best to act as soon as you find it! The first step is to carefully scoop up as much of the makeup as you can without spreading it into a larger spot.

For each specific makeup spot, there is a specific solution you can mix :

  • Nail polish:
    • No-color, no-fragrance non-acetone nail polish remover
  • Foundation (liquid):
    • 3% hydrogen peroxide solution
  • Eye-liner and mascara:
    • 1 cup of warm water with ¼ teaspoon of dishwashing liquid
  • Lipstick:
    • Paint remover or rubbing alcohol
  1. After you’ve mixed the appropriate solution based on the type of makeup you’re cleaning up, add a small amount of the solution to a clean white cloth. Make sure the cloth is damp, but not completely soaked.
  2. Blot the spot (avoid rubbing) using the saturated cloth. It’s important to firmly blot to lift as much of the makeup residue out of the carpet as possible!
  3. Repeat these steps until the makeup spot is no longer visible. If you can’t seem to get it out, call the professionals and ask for advice.
  4. Once you’ve removed the spot, spray the affected area with water to rinse out any solution.
  5. Then, once the carpet is completely dry, vacuum the area.
