What to do about ink
Different ink spots & how to remove them
Let’s talk about ink spots:
Water-Based Ink
These spots are the easiest to remove! Both washable markers and t-shirt prints contain water-based ink. If you need to remove a water-based ink spot from fabric, place a towel or paper towels underneath the affected area. Using a cotton ball, apply a bit of rubbing alcohol. Press firmly until the spot is absorbed.
Permanent Ink Stains
Permanent ink isn’t quite as easy to tackle, since this type of ink usually leaves a STAIN, not a spot. However, there are some steps you can take to lessen the impact! Some permanent ink stains may leave some residue behind, but depending on how fast you act, the results can vary.
If you are working with a fabric, first try applying rubbing alcohol onto the ink stain with a cotton swab. After firmly pressing, rinse the garment to remove the alcohol. If this technique isn’t working, try repeating the process using nail polish remover or acetone instead of rubbing alcohol.
Your degree of success will depend on how large the stain is and how long it has been there. It’s important to try one of these techniques asap, the quicker the better!
Ballpoint Ink Spots
The ink in a ballpoint pen is made of pigments and dyes that provide color. Ballpoint ink is slightly thick, slow drying, and free of particles — all of which makes it a bit easier to remove than permanent ink!
First, as with the other inks, try using rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball. But, if that doesn’t remove the spot, shaving cream is another option you can try depending on the surface you’re cleaning!
